New York scales up AI tool, training resources to entire state government

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the deployment of the custom AI tool, AI Pro, and training materials to the entire state government workforce of over 100,000 employees, following a successful pilot program.
AI Pro, powered by Google Gemini and developed by the New York Office of Information Technology Services, aims to help state employees gain AI skills, understand AI benefits, and solve current state problems.
The pilot involved over 1,200 participants across eight state agencies and showed significant benefits: 75% saved time, 90% improved their understanding of AI, and 86% wanted to continue using the tool.
The training program, in partnership with InnovateUS, focuses on responsible AI use and is compulsory for agencies adopting AI Pro.
With this initiative, New York claims to be the largest state in the U.S. to offer such an AI tool to its entire state workforce.
Users noted various improvements in tasks like crafting summaries, translating complex topics, and creating data dashboards, and there was a 36% increase in confidence using generative AI among participants.
The state’s chief information officer praised Gov. Hochul’s initiative and emphasized the potential for positive changes and skill development for employees.
