Google Maps adds AI-based EV route planning to Android Auto

Google Maps now enables route planning for electric vehicles (EVs) without requiring direct vehicle data integration.
Users input their vehicle’s starting state of charge, enabling the system to dynamically update projections based on driving conditions and charging events.
The app uses a combination of artificial intelligence and advanced energy modelling, analyzing car details such as weight and battery size, alongside real-time data about traffic, road elevation, and weather to deliver accurate predictions.
Google Maps positions itself as a central interface for EV navigation, reducing the need for reliance on third-party applications.
The feature aims to mitigate range anxiety by recommending optimal charging stops, including their timing, duration, and estimated battery level upon arrival.
The rollout is currently available for hundreds of EV models in the US, including brands like BMW, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen, with plans to expand to more models and markets.
