Arm Is Now Making Its Own Chips

Arm, a major chip design firm, announced the production of its own semiconductors, marking a shift from its previous model of licensing intellectual property.
The new chip, called the Arm AGI CPU, is designed for artificial general intelligence (AGI) tasks and aims to capture a portion of the CPU market optimized for AI workloads.
The chip is fabricated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation using their 3nm process and is touted for its energy efficiency and superior performance per watt compared to competitors like Intel and AMD.
Arm’s first major customer is Meta, with additional early purchasers including companies like OpenAI, SAP, Cerebras, and Cloudflare.
Arm’s CEO Rene Haas emphasized the company’s support from tech industry leaders and highlighted the potential long-term benefits for customers and the increased efficiency of their new CPU.
Arm’s move into manufacturing could position it as both a partner and a competitor to traditional chipmakers like Intel and AMD, especially as it develops more general-purpose CPUs.
The company’s history dates back to the late 1970s with its evolution following the mobile revolution, currently dominating the mobile chip market through licensing.
With its new direction, Arm risks alienating some of its existing partners, especially those like Nvidia that are already building stand-alone CPUs.
