Parents Ask Gov. Shapiro to Address Deepfakes in Schools

Parents of victims of AI deepfakes at Radnor High School urged Gov. Josh Shapiro to create statewide standards for school responses to similar incidents.
During a roundtable discussion in West Chester, the parents highlighted issues with their school’s dismissive and inadequate response to the deepfake incident.
They called for better training for students and faculty, increased accountability for offending students, and improved resources for victimized parents.
Shapiro has been advocating for more regulations against AI, including cellphone bans in classrooms and investigating misleading chatbots.
The governor promised to ask the Pennsylvania Department of Education to develop guidelines for school districts and provide clear directions for parents in similar situations.
Radnor High School officials initially downplayed the incident, but the parents argued that state-level action is needed as the issue is not isolated to their district.
Similar frustrations have been expressed in the Council Rock School District where students were also victimized by AI deepfakes.
