NAIRR at 2 years: Advancing American artificial intelligence innovation and leadership

The National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR), launched two years ago, aims to expand opportunities and accelerate discovery in AI innovation across the U.S.
Led by the U.S. National Science Foundation in partnership with federal agencies and private contributors, NAIRR provides advanced AI resources accessible to researchers, educators, and students nationwide.
NAIRR’s public-private collaboration model significantly accelerates innovation and economic growth, supporting over 600 research teams and 6,000 students across the country.
Projects funded by NAIRR include vision-language models for agricultural resilience, automated planning for cervical cancer treatments, investigating security issues in large language models, and exploring large language model internal computations.
NAIRR’s 2026 annual meeting, held in Virginia, highlighted various AI-enabled scientific advances and fostered collaboration for improved infrastructure development.
Looking forward, NAIRR is considering regional hubs to expand training and practical experience with AI systems, expanding access across a broad range of institutions.
