New Faculty Coalition Fights Against Artificial Intelligence

Founder’s Concerns: Mary Holland, a SUNY New Paltz English professor, founded the Educating Without AI group due to her worries about the negative impacts of AI on students’ education and abilities.
Group Formation: The Educating Without AI group includes over 80 SUNY New Paltz faculty members who advocate for teaching AI-free classes.
Survey and Forum: The group has organized an AI faculty forum and conducted surveys; preliminary results show negative perceptions of AI’s impact on writing skills and a desire for AI-free classes among both faculty and students.
Advocacy for AI-Free Courses: They are campaigning for the establishment of AI-free course designations and a unified campus AI policy, aiming to ensure clear standards regarding AI usage in education.
Provost Support: Provost William McClure has been receptive and supportive of the group’s initiatives and provided financial and institutional backing for their February Faculty Forum on AI.
Future Plans: The group aims to form a committee of students and faculty to monitor AI’s evolving impact on education and to advocate for policies that maintain educational integrity.
