Muskegon Police utilize AI tool to help track speeding

The Muskegon Police Department in Michigan is utilizing a new AI-powered software tool called Urban SDK to gain insights into speeding, accident-prone areas, and traffic congestion within the city.
The software collects data from vehicles manufactured post-2007 and from the Michigan Department of Transportation, providing general estimates of vehicle speeds through travel time and distance analysis.
The city has been using the tool for five months under a three-year contract costing $26,742 annually. The data helps verify speeding complaints and strategically deploy officers.
Unlike traditional speed monitoring systems, Urban SDK does not record license plates or cell phone data and does not provide personal data, only general speeding trends within specified time frames.
The software supports proactive traffic monitoring tailored to specific times and locations rather than random enforcement efforts, and it aids in planning for potential new business developments in the city.
The tool also assists in determining optimal traffic light and control device placements and supports seasonal traffic trend analysis.
The police department is not fully staffed and plans to hire more officers to enhance the quality of law enforcement across multiple areas, including a potential K-9 unit and more proactive policing approaches.
