New legislation offered by U.S. Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA) would create a pilot program to award competitive grants to career and technical education (CTE) programs that incorporate cybersecurity into their curriculum.
“I am proud to lead this legislation in an effort to ensure our nation’s data is protected at all costs,” Rep. Thompson said on March 11. “It’s important that students have access to the necessary education and training to respond to breaches and keep our data systems secure.”
The congressman sponsored the bipartisan Cybersecurity Skills Integration Act, H.R. 7885, alongside lead original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), co-chairs of the Congressional CTE Caucus.
The purpose of the bill, according to its text, is to improve the cybersecurity competencies of the critical infrastructure workforce, particularly operators of critical infrastructure technology, by developing post-secondary CTE programs that integrate cybersecurity education.
If enacted, H.R. 7885 also would require the U.S. Department of Education to coordinate with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology when awarding grants.
“Cybersecurity professionals are an integral part of America’s safety and economic prosperity,” said Rep. Bonamici. “This bipartisan legislation will help secure a strong future for our country’s critical infrastructure by providing students with increased access to cybersecurity education programs.”
The Consortium for School Networking, ACTE, and Advance CTE support H.R. 7885, which has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee.
