China says it is the world leader in R&D for AI, vows to boost tech self-reliance

China declared it is the global leader in AI and quantum technology research and development, as well as in other key technological fields such as robotics and biochemical research in a government report to the National People’s Congress.
Premier Li Qiang emphasized China’s dedication to “new quality productive forces”, which includes advanced technologies, in his main government work report.
The country is aiming to achieve greater technology self-reliance and to invest more in cutting-edge industries, such as machine-brain interfaces, while increasing its focus on commercialized technologies.
To challenge the U.S. dominance in the AI industry, China plans to establish “hyper-scale” computing clusters and promote open-source AI initiatives.
China is also focusing on fostering demand for domestic technology produced by state-owned enterprises, notably in chip-making, biomedicine, and drones.
