(KMOT) — When you pay your utility bills through a city website, you want to make sure the municipality will keep your financial information safe from online crooks.A small town in the Minot area is upgrading its cybersecurity system, which it hopes will increase confidence from city residents. The city of Kenmare is looking to beef up its cybersecurity measures.Police Chief Tyler Rispa wanted to make this move after he started last December.“We need an upgrade in cybersecurity to better provide cybersecurity for our citizens in Kenmare,” said Tyler Rispa. The new system will be through DNA Mobility Consultants out of Fargo. They work with other law enforcement agencies across the state. The increased security will not only benefit the police department, but city auditor, Tammy Knutson, said it will go a long ways in keeping residents’ information provided to the city safe as well.“The information that we most want to protect in our office is our water accounts,” said Tammy Knutson.Knutson added various forms of citizen information is stored based on payment type. The system will include on-site and backup servers, firewalls, and encryption.KMOT Reporter, Lindsey Miller: “Was there any existing security for cybersecurity-related things in the community?”“There were a couple very basic cybersecurity things that the city had, but just not functioning at the level that I believe a city hall and city police department should have,” said Rispa. The system will cost $30,000.Rispa is proud to share it comes at no additional cost to taxpayers.“I just really wanted to make sure that we saved money and that we did the most cost-effective way of providing cybersecurity for the citizens of Kenmare,” said Rispa.Protecting residents face-to-face and through the firewall. The upgrades will be installed in a few weeks.Copyright 2026 KFYR.
