Massachusetts debuts ChatGPT-powered AI assistant for all executive-branch employees

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced that the state’s 40,000 executive-branch employees will gain access to a ChatGPT-powered AI assistant, a pioneering move for state government.
This implementation follows a competitive procurement process and partnership with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
The deployment will proceed in phases starting with the Executive Office of Technology Services and Security, followed by other agencies.
The AI assistant is intended to improve the efficiency of government services and is planned to operate within a secure, walled-off environment to protect state data.
Use of the AI tool is regulated by the technology office’s privacy division and relevant AI policies, aimed at ensuring secure, ethical usage.
State CIO Jason Snyder emphasized that the goal is not just to adopt AI, but to incorporate it in a manner that reflects the state’s values and strengthens public trust.
The rollout will coincide with optional training programs to educate employees on best practices and the strategic use of the AI assistant.
Massachusetts becomes the first state to announce such a comprehensive deployment across an entire branch of state government, contrasting with other states’ limited pilot programs for enterprise versions of similar AI tools.
