UN chief launches global scientific panel on artificial intelligence to serve ‘all of humanity’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the creation of an Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The panel is described as a global initiative “to serve all of humanity” amidst fast technological advancements.
The panel aims to address AI, focusing on bridging the AI knowledge gap and assessing its real-world impacts on economies and societies.
Guterres emphasized the rapid development of AI, emphasizing the need for shared understandings to build safeguards, foster innovation, and encourage international cooperation.
Following an open global call, Guterres recommended 40 experts with diverse expertise to the UN General Assembly, to serve in their personal capacity.
The panel is expected to deliver its first report by the Global Dialogue on AI Governance in July.
The UN Secretary-General highlighted the importance of “common ground and a practical basis for cooperation based on science and solidarity” in shaping AI’s transformation of the world.
Among the proposed 40 experts, Melahat Bilge Demirkoz from Türkiye stands out as a professor at the Middle East Technical University (METU).
