CDAO invests in AI-enabled translation for military-wide use

The Pentagon has selected California-based tech company LILT to provide artificial intelligence-powered translation services to military forces worldwide.
The Defense Department’s Chief Digital and AI Office awarded LILT a flexible other transaction contract after their technology was proven through a prototype developed by the Defense Innovation Unit.
LILT’s AI platform is designed to rapidly and accurately translate text, video, and audio content, facilitating better communication and understanding in military settings.
The Army’s Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) has already started using LILT’s technology to rapidly translate materials, reducing the time it took to a few weeks compared to the previous year’s full-year process for the Command and General Staff Officer Course.
LILT’s translation advancements are expected to help integrate international military partners more effectively in exercises, classrooms, and combat outposts.
The contract’s total value was not disclosed, and a Pentagon spokesperson did not provide additional details in response to requests for information.
This move aligns with the Department of Defense’s new AI Acceleration Strategy aimed at incorporating emerging AI technologies into daily military operations.
