University of Ottawa launches medical hub to accelerate AI-driven health breakthroughs

The University of Ottawa has launched the Ottawa Medical Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (OMARI), led by Dr. Khaled El Emam, focusing on promoting cross-cutting collaborations and enhancing the university’s standing in medical AI research.
Located within the Faculty of Medicine, OMARI aims to drive new medical discoveries, improve teaching methods using AI, and achieve better health equity through data-driven tools.
The institute is designed to assist researchers in collaborating with world-class affiliated hospitals and research institutes, helping to create a flourishing research ecosystem in Ottawa.
OMARI will facilitate innovation, commercialization, and the use of non-traditional funding sources, emphasizing the co-creation of medical AI solutions through ‘communities of practice.’
The institute aims to guide students and researchers in employing AI to speed up coding and research analysis, integrating AI into education as well as medical practice.
Dr. El Emam aims to bridge gaps by providing researchers with necessary resources like computing power, software, talent, and funding to stay competitive in the medical AI field.
