Man indicted in Houston area’s first federal AI child exploitation case

A 34-year-old man, Kane James Kellum, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Houston area for using artificial intelligence apps to create child pornography from photos of individuals he knew, marking the first such indictment in the region.
Kellum was arrested before Christmas and faces four counts related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Investigators found multiple AI-generated videos of explicit acts involving a 3-year-old and a 15-year-old victim known to Kellum, including one where the child’s face was superimposed on an adult woman’s naked body.
Authorities highlight the challenge posed by AI in creating child pornography, especially from overseas platforms that may not report such activities to law enforcement.
Law experts suggest that regulation and legislative action are necessary to prevent the misuse of AI and ensure responsible use of AI platforms.
To protect children online, law enforcement advises securing social media accounts and considering modifications like covering children’s faces in photos to prevent their images from being exploited to create CSAM.
