Inventor Building AI-Powered Suicide Chamber

The inventor, Philip Nitschke, has completed the artificial intelligence (AI) integration for the “Sarco pod,” a controversial suicide euthanasia chamber first built in 2019.
The Sarco pod was used in 2024 to facilitate the suicide of a 64-year-old woman in Switzerland, marking the first real-world use. This incident led to the arrest of Florian Willet, then co-president of The Last Resort, who was eventually released after two months.
The AI in the Sarco pod’s “Double Dutch” iteration will administer a psychiatric test to determine a person’s mental capacity to die, replacing traditional psychiatric assessments.
If successful, the AI test will activate the pod for a 24-hour window, during which a person can press the button to use it. Missed activations necessitate taking the AI test again.
Ethical concerns arise given AI’s historical inaccuracies and previous involvement in mental health support, where it has potentially encouraged suicidal thoughts among users.
