Oklo is developing small, fast-spectrum nuclear reactors known as “Aurora powerhouses” to provide continuous on-site power to large data centers, using either fresh or recycled fuel.
The company aims to own and operate these reactors, similar to a utility, generating recurring revenue by supplying power to data centers, aligning with the growing need for AI-related electricity.
Oklo has strategic partnerships with data center infrastructure companies like Equinix and Switch, and has been commissioned by Meta to build a 1.2 gigawatt power campus in Ohio.
Despite promising technological and strategic advantages, Oklo does not yet have the necessary regulatory approvals from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, delaying the commercial launch until at least 2027.
The company’s significant R&D investments result in heavy losses currently but has substantial cash reserves to fund ongoing operations.
