Texas names chief AI and innovation officer as interim CIO

Tony Sauerhoff has been designated as the interim chief information officer and executive director of the Texas Department of Information Resources following Amanda Crawford’s departure.
Sauerhoff previously served as the state’s chief artificial intelligence and innovation officer, and has over 30 years of experience in information technology and cybersecurity in both public and private sectors.
He previously held the role of chief information security officer, where he contributed to establishing a cybersecurity incident reporting portal for local government agencies.
In his role as the chief AI and innovation officer, Sauerhoff spearheaded statewide adoption of AI and emerging technologies and is the president of the board for GovRAMP which determines cloud computing security standards.
The Texas Department of Information Resources is currently searching for a permanent executive director.
Steve Pier, DIR’s former deputy executive director and deputy CIO, has been appointed as the executive director of the Texas Workforce Commission, taking a similar transition position.
Both Crawford and Pier are set to commence their new roles in the first week of February.
