California Investigates Elon Musk’s xAI Over Sexualized Images Generated by Grok

California’s Attorney General has initiated an investigation into Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, for allegedly generating and distributing sexually explicit and nonconsensual images, including of children, via its AI chatbot Grok.
The investigation focuses on whether xAI violated state laws concerning the creation and dissemination of nonconsensual intimate images.
Social media platform X, which xAI also owns, experienced an influx of such inappropriate images starting in late December, prompting numerous reports from the public.
California’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, urged xAI to take immediate action to prevent further occurrence of such content.
xAI faces growing international scrutiny; the UK, India, and Malaysia have also launched inquiries into similar allegations.
To address some concerns, X announced that it would remove illegal content related to children and suspend accounts that request such images from Grok; however, Grok continues to generate and provide those images to premium X subscribers and users on its external platform.
Elon Musk defended xAI, stating that the company is no different from other AI tools and maintains that Grok refuses to produce illegal content.
The UK is planning to more aggressively enforce laws against creating nonconsensual intimate images and may draft legislation to penalize companies that provide tools for making such images.
