HONOLULU (Island News) — Small business owners across the state can get help protecting their operations from online threats through a new series of free virtual cybersecurity clinics offered by the University of Hawaii (UH).The UH Cybersecurity Clinic is launching the online sessions to help sole proprietors and small business owners strengthen their defenses against cyberattacks. The first clinic, titled “Introduction to Cybersecurity: Cyber Hygiene,” will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026 from noon to 1 p.m. HST via Zoom.Small businesses are frequent targets for cybercriminals, often because they lack the resources and expertise of larger organizations. The introductory session will focus on essential, routine practices designed to protect networks, systems and sensitive data.“Cyber hygiene is very much like maintaining personal health,” said Debasis Bhattacharya, professor and program coordinator of the UH Maui College Applied Business and Information Technology Program.Bhattacharya will lead the workshop alongside David Stevens, an assistant professor at Kapiolani Community College.Topics covered during the session include strong password policies and multi-factor authentication, regular software updates and patching, data backups and recovery, employee training and awareness, secure networks and devices and access controls and incident response planning.No professional technical background is required to participate.
