Utah is piloting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as an autonomous clinical decision-maker by partnering with AI company Doctronic.
Residents in Utah can now chat with an AI agent to renew prescriptions quickly, reducing wait times for routine medication refills.
Doctronic believes that the medication refill issue is a significant pain point that justifies using AI, claiming it will improve adherence and prevent medical problems.
The Utah AI regulatory sandbox program allows companies to test novel programs with temporary regulatory relief data to gather evidence to present to legislators.
The pilot program focuses on refilling a limited number of commonly prescribed drugs, excluding risky medications like narcotics and stimulants to minimize risk.
The program proceeds in phases, with the first 250 refills overseen by human clinicians, followed by sampling to verify AI decisions.
Doctronic will provide monthly reports detailing user numbers, impacts, technology assessments, and observations made by clinicians.
The ultimate goal is to create a robust evidentiary case for best practices in AI-assisted clinical decision-making that could legally be possible due to the state’s regulatory sandbox.
