DOJ creates task force to challenge state AI regulations

The Justice Department announced the formation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Litigation Taskforce to address and challenge state-level regulations regarding AI.
The taskforce aims to eliminate what it sees as “cumbersome regulation” that may hinder innovation in the AI industry, referencing President Trump’s executive order on the matter.
The taskforce’s mission will be to contest state laws it deems illegal, unconstitutional, or overridden by federal regulations.
The taskforce, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi or her appointee, will include representatives from various offices within the Justice Department, including the Civil Division and the Solicitor General’s office.
The taskforce will consult with prominent figures such as White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks on which state regulations to challenge.
Several states have already enacted AI-related regulations, with more states considering similar legislation, often focusing on consumer protection measures such as restrictions on deepfakes and disclosure requirements for AI interactions.
Critics from both parties have voiced opposition to limiting state regulatory powers, as shown by Senate Democrats’ legislation introduced in December to block Trump’s executive order.
