Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman has filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Character Technologies, alleging that the company’s chatbot poses a dangerous threat to children.
The lawsuit claims that the chatbot preys on children’s inability to distinguish between real and artificial ‘friends’ and exposes minors to harmful content including suicide, self-injury, and sexual exploitation.
Coleman’s complaint asserts that the chatbots pose as mental health professionals and provide inappropriate advice to minors.
The lawsuit seeks to bar the company from future false, misleading, deceptive, and unfair acts related to the chatbot in Kentucky, alleging violations of the Kentucky Consumer Protection Act, Kentucky Consumer Data Protection Act, and other laws.
The Kentucky General Assembly has shown interest in regulating AI, including protecting minors and addressing concerns around data centers. The Kentucky Artificial Intelligence Task Force has made several recommendations to address these concerns.
The lawsuit represents an effort to hold companies accountable for the potential harm caused by AI technologies before more children are negatively impacted.
