Utah Looks to AI to Make Prescription Renewals More Efficient

The Utah Department of Commerce’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP) has established a regulatory framework enabling an AI system to participate in the medical decision-making process for prescription renewals, marking a significant step in the country.
OAIP aims to streamline AI advancements efficiently while maintaining consumer protections and providing reasonable oversight.
The latest partnership with Doctronic, an AI-native health platform, seeks to enhance the efficiency of prescription renewals which constitute around 80 percent of medication activity.
This framework will involve evaluation of several key metrics, including patient satisfaction, adherence timelines, safety protocols, cost outcomes, and workflow efficiency.
OAIP’s efforts align with similar AI exploration initiatives in other states like Arizona, Massachusetts, and New Jersey which have created sandbox environments for safe AI experimentation.
OAIP emphasizes that its initiative is aimed at societal impact over internal government AI usage, while focusing on accountability and broader AI implications.
The results from the partnership with Doctronic will be publicly shared with the aim of influencing both state and federal AI policy.
OAIP and Doctronic express hope that other states will follow Utah’s example in exploring the benefits of AI in healthcare.
