AI technology set to transform drug prescription renewals in Utah – Deseret News

Utah’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy has approved the first state program enabling AI in legally participating in medical decision-making for prescription renewals through a partnership with health tech startup Doctronic.
The AI-driven platform is aimed at automating medication renewals and screening for dangerous medication interactions, which are considered significant contributors to preventable health outcomes.
The program is part of a “regulatory sandbox” initiative that temporarily eases laws to allow AI experimentation while maintaining patient safety and appropriate oversight.
The approval marks the first instance of such a regulatory arrangement in the country, potentially reshaping access to care and improving health outcomes.
According to the company, the AI system matches physicians’ treatment plans in 99.2% of urgent care cases.
Despite the promise of the initiative, there are calls for caution regarding the use of AI-driven systems without physicians’ involvement, as it could present risks to both patients and healthcare providers.
