Army creates new AI-focused career field for soldiers

The U.S. Army has introduced a new specialty, “49B Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning,” designed for officers to pursue a career focused on integrating AI and machine learning into Army operations.
This initiative aims to make “uniformed experts” who develop efficient logistics networks and speed up battlefield decision-making.
Eligibility for this specialized career path is available through the Volunteer Transfer Incentive Program, targeting officers with technical and academic experience in AI and machine learning.
The training for new 49B officers will include graduate-level education focused on building and deploying AI systems for military applications.
Officers in this new field will also oversee the deployment of battlefield robots, aligning with the Army’s broader efforts to expand its use of autonomous drones.
This new specialty is part of the U.S. military’s larger strategy to incorporate AI and is expected to begin reclassification of the first group by the end of September.
