Anthropic, a US artificial intelligence lab, scored the highest in a safety ranking released by the Future of Life Institute but the industry overall still fails to adequately combat “existential” threats according to the report.
-
Meta moved up two places to fourth place while xAI dropped three spots to seventh place.
-
Mistral, a French AI firm, placed last in the ranking.
-
The rankings involved assessment across six distinct categories: risk assessment, current harms, safety frameworks, existential safety, governance and accountability, and information sharing.
-
The report highlighted that “existential” threats like pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) models which reach human-level intelligence, are not adequately addressed by the industry.
-
The report also noted that several companies which once banned their technology from being used for military purposes, have now reversed their decision, including Anthropic.
-
Despite constructive attempts, the report stated that industry efforts to address AI safety remain ‘entirely inadequate’.
-
Lastly, it was reported that the US government used Anthropic’s technology in military operations in Venezuela and Iran, although the company faced a temporary Pentagon ban over disagreements on AI safety.
