Most mainstream films already use AI. The new Oscars rules won’t stop that

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has set new eligibility criteria for Oscar-contending films starting from 2027, disallowing movies featuring AI-generated actors and non-human authored scripts.
The changes, however, do not ban all artificial intelligence (AI); they allow the use of AI in film as long as the creative direction is driven by humans.
The new rules follow controversies around AI in the 2025 awards season, including AI voice modification and cloning cases.
Historically, automation and AI have been part of the filmmaking process, from editing tools to CGI, and are currently widely used to assist in tasks like script breakdown, scheduling shoots, and post-production enhancements.
The Academy’s adjustments aim to focus on human authorship in film and emphasize transparent and consensual use of AI, aligning with broader discussions about AI principles in creative industries.
