Insulin Resistance Is A Risk Factor For Cancer, Says AI

Researchers from the University of Tokyo developed a machine learning model named AI-IR to predict insulin resistance based on nine medical parameters.
The AI-IR model was applied to half a million participants from the UK Biobank, establishing a link between insulin resistance and the risk of 12 types of cancer.
Insulin resistance, a root cause of diabetes, also contributes to cardiovascular, kidney, and liver diseases.
The AI-IR model addresses limitations in using body mass index (BMI) alone to evaluate insulin resistance, providing a more comprehensive assessment.
The study’s findings suggest that AI-IR could facilitate early identification of high-risk individuals for focused screening of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
The team aims to further understand the genetic influences on insulin resistance and link human data with molecular biology studies to develop better strategies to combat insulin resistance.
