California launches investigation into child porn on Elon Musk’s AI site

California is investigating xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, over the creation of nonconsensual sexually explicit AI deepfakes on X.
The investigation was prompted by concerns that Grok, xAI’s chatbot, allows users to morph existing photos into explicit images, some of which are nonconsensual and involve minors.
Critics argue that there are inadequate safeguards against producing and disseminating nonconsensual images and potential child pornography.
Newsom described the sexualized images as “vile,” and Attorney General Rob Bonta is urging xAI to take immediate action to prevent further dissemination of such material.
In 2024, Newsom signed legislation that makes it illegal to create or distribute AI-generated sexually explicit images of minors, reflecting strict state measures to combat this issue.
