The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA)\u00a0 has intensified its nationwide cybersecurity awareness campaign as part of efforts to promote safe and responsible internet use across the country. The latest phase of the initiative, known as the \u201cCybersecurity Marathon,\u201d was held in Gbarnga, Bong County, where students and educators from five secondary schools participated in awareness sessions on digital safety and cyber resilience.
\nThe programme brought together students in grades 7 to 9 and administrators from John Bakalu Jr. & Senior High School, N.V. Massaquoi High School, Lelekpayea Junior & Senior High School, Dorothy Cooper Junior & Senior High School, and host institution William V.S. Tubman Gray United Methodist High School. County officials, including the Superintendent and County Education Officer, also attended the event.
\nDelivering an overview of the initiative, LTA Commissioner for International Gateway Services and Internet Governance Angela Cassell-Bush said the Cybersecurity Marathon reflects the regulator\u2019s commitment to taking cybersecurity awareness beyond urban centres and into communities across Liberia. She stressed that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility requiring the active participation of government, institutions and citizens alike, particularly young people who are increasingly exposed to digital technologies.
\nCassell-Bush encouraged continued collaboration to ensure every Liberian gains a better understanding of online safety, noting that cybersecurity is an ongoing journey that demands constant vigilance, cooperation and adaptation to evolving digital threats.
\nIn his keynote address, Senator Prince K. Moye commended the LTA for organizing the campaign and urged students\u2014whom he described as Liberia\u2019s first generation of digital natives\u2014to use the internet responsibly. He warned that while digital connectivity creates opportunities for education and economic growth, it also exposes users to cyber risks that require awareness and caution.
\nLTA Chairperson Clarence K. Massaquoi reaffirmed the authority\u2019s commitment to advancing digital transformation while combating cybercrime. He described the fight against cyber threats as an ongoing race that the regulator is determined to win and announced 20 scholarships for students who excelled during the event\u2019s cybersecurity question-and-answer session.
