Photo credit Kelley Nalley, Library of Congress.<br \/>\nLibrary of Congress\u00a0Chief Information Officer Judith Conklin signed\u00a0an agreement formally constituting\u00a0AI4LAM last winter, and now the\u00a0Library\u00a0is looking forward to its first co-hosted\u00a0Fantastic Futures\u00a0conference\u00a0this\u00a0September.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nThe growth of\u00a0this\u00a0organization from a small network eight years ago\u00a0to its robust current form\u00a0indicates\u00a0the importance of\u00a0LAM (library, archive, and museum)\u00a0voices in AI discussions and implementation.\u00a0As experts in data and technology transformation, practitioners in these organizations\u00a0hope\u00a0to\u00a0ensure that AI adoption is purposeful and responsible.\u00a0<br \/>\nAI4LAM is\u00a0\u201can international, participatory community focused on advancing the use of artificial intelligence in, for and by libraries, archives and museums.\u201d\u00a0AI4LAM\u2019s vision\u00a0states that the organization\u00a0\u201cenvisions a future where the collective strength of libraries, archives, and museums drives innovation in the cultural heritage sector\u00a0through responsible, reliable, and trustworthy AI solutions, fostering cultural development and societal growth for a better tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\nThe\u00a0Library\u00a0has\u00a0taken on a leadership role\u00a0since the organization\u2019s 2018 launch by the National Library of Norway and Stanford University Libraries, serving as one of seven organizations in a\u00a0secretariat formed in 2019. The\u00a0Library, working with the Smithsonian Institution and the\u00a0National Gallery of Art, also organized an\u00a0AI4LAM\u00a0D.C.\u00a0Chapter\u00a0in 2025.\u00a0<br \/>\nAI4LAM\u00a0aims\u00a0to make responsible and effective use of AI\u00a0by\u00a0organizing collective efforts\u00a0to\u00a0develop and share\u00a0new practices and standards and support\u00a0sector-wide\u00a0innovation.\u00a0Working groups\u00a0address key areas of practice on specific AI topics, and events include\u00a0webinars and community\u00a0calls\u00a0for practitioners.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nThe institutions in AI4LAM grapple with major issues related to the cultural heritage sector in the age of AI, aiming to facilitate the adoption of AI tools while ensuring ethical, informed, transparent, and strategic use. The organization addresses challenges specific to library, archival, and museum institutions, like ensuring that ongoing access to knowledge is freely available and trustworthy.\u00a0<br \/>\nThe eighth meeting of the organization\u2019s flagship annual conference,\u00a0Fantastic Futures, is scheduled for September 15-17, 2026.\u00a0The theme of the conference is Fantastic Futures 2026: Trust in the Loop, and the meeting will be co-hosted by the Library, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution, with support from staff at these organizations and the AI4LAM D.C.\u00a0Chapter.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nWant to be in the loop?
