One of the busiest online shopping seasons of the year is also one of the busiest times for cybercriminals. As millions of Americans search for Prime Day deals and other summer sales, cybersecurity experts are warning consumers to be on the lookout for fake shopping websites, phishing emails, scam text messages, and fraudulent advertisements designed to steal personal information and financial data.Speaking with The National News Desk, cybersecurity expert and privacy attorney Leeza Garber said the combination of limited-time discounts, urgency, and high online traffic creates ideal conditions for scammers.”Shopping season is exciting, but it’s also the perfect storm for cybercriminals,” Garber said. She explained that many scams rely on creating a false sense of urgency, whether it’s claiming you’ve won a gift card, offering an exclusive discount, or warning that a package has been delayed or lost. Those messages often encourage users to click on links that appear legitimate but instead lead to fraudulent websites designed to collect usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive information.According to Garber, one of the safest habits consumers can adopt is navigating directly to a retailer’s official website or mobile app rather than clicking links in emails, text messages, advertisements, or social media posts. The warning comes as cybersecurity researchers report a surge in newly registered domains designed to imitate major retailers. Garber noted that the Better Business Bureau has identified Amazon as one of the most frequently impersonated companies online. Many of the fake websites are intentionally designed to look nearly identical to legitimate shopping pages. In some cases, scammers change only a single character in a web address, making it difficult for consumers to recognize they’re visiting a fraudulent site.”The website may look exactly like Amazon,” Garber said, “but it’s really collecting your information.”She recommends typing web addresses directly into a browser, using official retailer apps whenever possible, and avoiding shopping links received through unsolicited emails, text messages, or social media.Garber also discussed a separate privacy issue involving Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.According to Garber, Meta recently paused an internal artificial intelligence training program after concerns were raised that employee computer activity—including keystrokes, mouse movements, and screen activity—was being collected to help train AI systems. She said the controversy illustrates a broader issue facing consumers as technology companies compete to develop increasingly advanced artificial intelligence models.”Data has become incredibly valuable,” Garber said. She noted that AI systems require enormous amounts of information for training, making personal data an increasingly important resource for technology companies.Although the Meta program reportedly involved employees rather than public users, Garber said the situation serves as a reminder for consumers to regularly review privacy settings across social media platforms, mobile devices, and online accounts. Many companies provide users with options to limit personalized advertising, restrict certain forms of data collection, and adjust privacy preferences. However, Garber noted that many of those settings require users to manually review and update them.”If you’re using a free service, it’s never really free,” she said. “Your data has value.”As online shopping activity continues to increase, Garber encourages consumers to remain cautious, verify website addresses before entering personal information, enable available security features, and take a few extra moments to review privacy settings on the digital services they use every day. With cybercriminals becoming increasingly sophisticated and artificial intelligence expanding the amount of data companies collect, experts say awareness remains one of the strongest tools consumers have to protect both their personal information and their finances.

Cybersecurity expert warns shoppers to watch for fake sites, phishing scams for Prime Day https://news3lv.com/news/nation-world/cybersecurity-expert-warns-shoppers-to-watch-for-fake-amazon-sites-phishing-scams-prime-day-cybercriminals-leeza-garber-scammers-online-shopping-retailers-impersonate-company-facebook-instagram-social-media-links-aidata…

https://news3lv.com/resources/media2/16x9/729/1320/0x7/90/0c94d9ea-1f37-4d87-8da2-ff108d3816d8-Screenshot20241204154106.png
[15
26,20,24,25
post-237088","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cybersecurity","tag-ai","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-cybersecurity","tag-phishing
