\n\t\t\tF5 today revealed it has acquired SurePath AI to gain access to a platform for detecting usage of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and platforms and enforcing cybersecurity policies within the context of a larger F5 AI Security Platform the company is now adding to its portfolio.Jimmy White, CTO for AI Security at F5, said in addition to continuing to offer SurePath AI as an independent platform, the capabilities enabled by the company will also be integrated into the F5 Application Delivery and Security Platform (ADSP).SurePath AI is analyzing network traffic to both identify what tools and AI models are being invoked as well as any application workload that has been deployed that accesses, for example, an AI model or a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. That approach will enable F5 to provide an approach to AI security that goes well beyond simply creating a whitelist of approved AI services, said White.The F5 AI Security Platform employs the capability to provide additional governance, testing, discovery, observability and runtime protection. F5 claims to have already stress-tested AI applications across more than 140,000 attack patterns, with the platform having demonstrated up to 98.2% efficacy.It\u2019s not clear just how widely organizations have deployed AI applications prior to thinking through all the cybersecurity implications. A recent F5 survey found that organizations on average are now coordinating access to seven AI models in production environments, with 77% reporting that inference workloads represent the largest segment of that activity. Not surprisingly, a full 88% also said they have encountered at least one AI-related operational or security challenge.The one thing that is certain is there will be many more AI-related incidents to come even as cybersecurity teams race to catch up with rates of adoption of a new technology platform that by any historical measure are unprecedented. The challenge is that in many cases cybersecurity teams are now trying to retroactively adopt and enforce cybersecurity policies long after new workflows have been defined.The F5 approach to meeting that challenge revolves around a platform that creates a data plane through which cybersecurity teams can first gain visibility into those workflows and then apply the appropriate policies as needed, said White. The urgency is that as AI agents are being deployed, they are to perform some type of action that inherently increases the overall level of risk an organization assumes, he added.That\u2019s especially critical in an era where countries may decide to create regulations limiting who can access what type of AI made based on their nationality, noted White. The issue right now is that it is difficult to correlate an IP address to the nationality of a specific end user, he said.Hopefully, it won\u2019t require multiple major incidents to create the will necessary to secure AI applications, but one way or another, it\u2019s only a matter of time before organizations will need to secure these tools, applications and platforms. In the meantime, cybersecurity teams, if they have not already, take the time and effort needed now to determine how best to secure AI applications that are only going to become more pervasively deployed across what are already highly distributed computing environments.
