Anthropic says the government believes it has found a way to “jailbreak” Fable 5, or trick it into performing actions it otherwise shouldn’t be able to. Anthropic claims the government has only provided verbal evidence of a “potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak, which essentially consists of asking the model to read a specific codebase and fix any software flaws.” Non-universal jailbreaks are jailbreaks that can only work in limited circumstances. Universal jailbreaks, on the other hand, allow individuals or groups to use a model any way they want, including to perform illicit actions such as cyberattacks or developing weapons. (Photo Illustration by Matteo Della Torre\/NurPhoto via Getty Images) \u00b7 NurPhoto via Getty Images Anthropic says it has reviewed the jailbreak it believes the government used as its basis for issuing its order, but claims that other models, such as OpenAI’s (OPAI.PVT) GPT-5.5, can also be jailbroken using the same method. What’s more, Anthropic says the vulnerabilities that the jailbreak identified “all appear relatively simple.” In a post on X, David Sacks, co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology, pushed back on Anthropic’s statement, saying that the government and a “trusted partner” believe the jailbreak is serious and criticized the company for not moving forward with a fix to prevent the jailbreak, despite CEO Dario Amodei’s repeated assurances that Anthropic is a safety-first AI company. “The Admin’s hope now is that Anthropic remediates the safety issue, the export control is lifted, and Fable goes back into general release,” Sacks wrote. “The Admin wants all of this to happen as soon as possible. It is frankly bewildering that Anthropic hasn’t wanted to comply with safety requests that it previously said were its highest priority,” he added. Anthropic initially announced its Claude Mythos Preview in April, saying it was its most capable model to date and particularly adept at finding flaws in software and exploiting them. At the time, the company said Mythos had already found major vulnerabilities in every major operating system and web browser. To combat that, Anthropic formed its Project Glasswing, a small group of roughly 40 companies that were given early access to Mythos to fix any vulnerabilities it found in their software. When it released Fable 5 last week, Anthropic said it worked to ensure that when users ask it certain questions, it will automatically revert to using its Claude Opus 4.8 model instead as a means of preventing Fable 5 from answering unauthorized queries. This isn’t Anthropic’s first run-in with the government. It previously drew the ire of the Trump administration when it refused to provide full access to its AI models to develop fully autonomous weapons or for the mass surveillance of Americans. That led Trump to demand all government agencies cease using Anthropic’s technology. The Pentagon also declared the company a supply chain threat, a designation that typically only applies to companies from foreign countries. Anthropic is suing the government over the designation. While the company hasn’t stated that the current dustup is related to its prior disagreement with the government, Sacks said in his post that “Those trying to misdirect and tie this action to prior [Department of Defense]\/ Anthropic issues are wrong.” All of this comes as Anthropic is preparing to launch its initial public offering. The company has already confidentially filed its IPO paperwork and is racing to beat rival OpenAI to the market in what is expected to be two of the most highly watched public offerings of the year, behind SpaceX, which went public Friday.
