We believe readers deserve to know how The Daily Catch uses AI tools — and, just as importantly, how we do not. We will update this document regularly. (It was, by the way, written by humans).

We use AI to help our journalists in everything from creating interview transcriptions to processing large amounts of data. At the same time, we want readers to know that every article published by The Daily Catch is authored by a human being and is reviewed and approved by at least one human editor — and usually two and sometimes three — in addition to the reporter who wrote it. Human beings remain responsible for our reporting, editing, fact-checking, judgment, and publishing decisions.

AI does not replace our journalists. In fact, The Daily Catch employs more people today — including more senior editorial staff — than we did when ChatGPT was introduced in 2023. Since 2023, in fact, we have doubled our reporting staff and added a managing editor.

How We Use AI

ResearchThe Daily Catch also uses AI bots as a research tool to answer the hundreds of factual and historical questions that arise during the reporting and editing process. Our staff routinely asks ChatGPT to explain legal procedures, summarize government reports and court decisions, provide historical context, verify AP Style usage, explain scientific and technical concepts, identify authoritative sources, and answer background questions ranging from the history of the Linotype machine to the meaning of environmental testing results or municipal law. These inquiries help our journalists work more efficiently, but every fact included in our reporting is independently reviewed and verified by a human editor before publication.

TranscriptionOur reporters use Otter AI to record and transcribe interviews and public meetings. This allows journalists to spend more time reporting and less time manually transcribing recordings. With this tool, we can also search transcriptions quickly to find meaningful quotes to include in articles.

Reviewing Lengthy DocumentsWe sometimes use AI tools, including ChatGPT, to help analyze lengthy public documents such as court decisions, financial filings, prospectuses, environmental studies, and government reports. For example, AI has helped us review court decisions related to major development projects like Six Senses and lengthy financial filings such as the prospectus for Rhinebeck Bank’s recent offering. Journalists verify all information before publication.

Reviewing Supporting MaterialsTown, village, school board, and planning board agendas often include hundreds of pages of supporting documents. AI can help scan these to identify key issues, summarize materials, and suggest inconsistencies between documents on related topics.

Managing CalculationsWe sometimes use ChatGPT or Claude to run intricate calculations that we can describe in narrative text language, and which AI can translate into formulas with outputs.

Headline DevelopmentEditors occasionally use AI tools to generate headline suggestions. Often, the final headline is a combination of multiple ideas or is substantially rewritten by staff.

Brief News ItemsWhen publishing shortened summaries of press releases in sections such as The Short Catch, AI may assist in condensing lengthy, boilerplate material into concise summaries. These summaries are reviewed and edited by our staff before publication.

StyleThe Daily Catch follows AP style; several AI engines “know” this style cold. It saves time to ask AI rather than to pore over spiral-bound paper guides.

Graphic DesignWe sometimes use AI image-generation tools to create illustrative graphics, particularly for special projects, anniversary features, explanatory pieces, or historical lookbacks. We do not use AI-generated images in a way that misrepresents actual events. When we use AI to create an image, we indicate with a credit line.

Grammar and Copy EditingTools such as Grammarly may suggest grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style corrections. Editors decide whether to accept or reject those suggestions one by one as they review stories.

How We Do Not Use AI

We do not allow AI to publish stories directly to our website. We do not rely on AI to make judgments about what to cover or how to cover it. We do not use AI-generated images to depict news events as though they were real photographs.

Photography and Visual ReportingWe do not use AI-generated images as substitutes for photographs of real people, events, places, or news. Our journalism relies on actual photography and visual reporting. AI-generated images may occasionally be used for clearly illustrative purposes, such as anniversary features, explanatory graphics, or other non-news content. When time permits, we prefer to hire human artists for all illustrations. When we use graphics generated with AI tools, which is very rare, we identify them. Budget stories are often hard to visualize, and we are fond of AI-generated images of piggy banks!

Our Commitment

Journalism depends on accuracy, fairness, transparency, accountability – and the touch and care of human beings. AI can help us work more efficiently, but it cannot replicate human judgment, local knowledge, skepticism, or responsibility.

Every story published by The Daily Catch remains the responsibility of human journalists and editors. That will not change. That is our promise to you, our readers.

Posted June 2026

How The Daily Catch Uses Artificial Intelligence https://www.thedailycatch.org/articles/how-the-daily-catch-uses-artificial-intelligence/ Publish Date: 2026-06-11 23:51:00 Source Domain: www.thedailycatch.org…

https://www.thedailycatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/5th-Anniversary_Leaderboard-Ad_728x90_May-1-2026.png
[14
20
post-230574","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-artificial-intelligence","tag-artificial-intelligence
