You might have missed a headline that recently sent shockwaves through the world\u2019s biggest banks and the U.S. Treasury Department. While you were busy preparing for the spring rush, the leaders of JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs were being summoned to emergency meetings in Washington, D.C. They were not there to talk about interest rates or inflation. They were there to talk about Mythos.Mythos is not a new brand of RV or a fancy reservation software. It is a new kind of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that has changed the rules of the game for cybersecurity. If you think your small-town campground or family-owned RV park is too small to be a target, it is time to look under the hood of your technology. The good old days of being ignored by hackers are over, and the reason is simple: Mythos makes anyone a pro-level hacker.Mark KoepFor years, hacking was a skill that took a lot of time and a lot of brainpower. If a hacker wanted to break into a system, they had to spend weeks or months digging through lines of computer code, looking for one tiny mistake to exploit. Mythos changed that overnight. Developed by an AI company called Anthropic, Mythos is a tool that can read computer code at lightning speed. In tests, it found thousands of security holes in major software. These were holes that humans had missed for over 20 years. More importantly, it does not just find the hole; it automatically writes the code to break in.The U.S. Treasury Secretary and the Federal Reserve held emergency meetings because they realized that if Mythos fell into the wrong hands, it could scan the entire global banking system for weaknesses in hours. For a long time, the Big Banks were the only ones who had to worry about high-level attacks. But now, that same power is becoming available to common cyber criminals. You might be thinking, \u201cI am just a 50-site park in the woods. Why would a super hacker care about me?\u201d The truth is, they do not have to care about you to hurt you. In the past, a hacker had to pick a target. With tools like Mythos, they do not have to pick. They can set the AI to scan the entire internet for a specific vulnerability. Imagine a thief who can check every door lock in the country at the same time. He does not care whose house it is; he just cares which door is unlocked. Our industry is particularly vulnerable because we often rely on legacy systems. These are older software programs that have not been updated in years. For example, a recent post in a popular campground owners\u2019 Facebook group mentioned a park still using a local version of a reservation software system. While this particular software has been a workhorse for many parks, running it on an old office computer that is connected to the internet is essentially leaving your front door wide open. A tool like Mythos can identify the version of software you are using, find a backdoor into your computer\u2019s operating system and take control of your customer data, credit card info and bank logins before you have even finished your morning coffee. Most park owners do not think of themselves as IT Managers, but if you take credit cards or book reservations online, that is exactly what you are. To protect your park, you need to understand your technology stack. Think of your stack like the layers of a cake. If any layer is rotten, the whole cake is ruined. The first layer is your hardware, which includes your office computers, routers, and Wi-Fi equipment. The big risk here is that old routers often have default passwords that AI can guess in seconds. The next layer is your operating system, like Windows 10 or Windows 11. If you have not clicked update lately, you are missing the armor that stops AI attacks. The third layer is your software, such as your reservation system. Whether your software lives on your computer or in the cloud, it must be constantly defended. Finally, the most important layer is the human. This means you and your staff. AI can now write phishing emails that look 100% real to trick you into giving up your private passwords.Technology is moving faster than we are. If you want to make sure your park survives this new era of machine speed threats, you need to start asking the right questions. A primary concern is whether your data is in the clouds or on the desk. If your reservation data is stored on a computer in your office, you are responsible for its security. If that computer gets a virus, your business stops. However, moving to a cloud-based system does not mean you are automatically safe. While big companies have more resources to fight hackers, they are also bigger targets. You should never assume a company is secure just because they are large. You need to ask them for proof of their security audits.Beyond location, you must consider when the software was last patched. Software companies release patches to fix holes. These are basically digital repairs. If you are using an old version of software because you do not like the new layout, you are choosing a familiar screen over a secure business. If your software has not had an update in six months, it is likely a sitting duck for Mythos. You also need to verify if you have multi-factor authentication (MFA) active. You probably use this for your personal bank. This is the tool that texts you a code to log in. You must turn this on for your reservation system and your business email. Even if Mythos finds your password, it cannot steal your cell phone to get that second code. This is one of the best ways to stop an AI attack. Furthermore, look at your Wi-Fi wall. If your office computer is on the same Wi-Fi network that your guests use, a guest with an infected laptop can allow a virus to crawl through the network to your office. Your office network should always be separated from your guest Wi-Fi.The arrival of Mythos means that the skill floor for hacking has dropped to the basement. It does not take a genius to rob a digital bank anymore; it just takes the right tool. Our industry is built on hospitality and the great outdoors, but we run on data. If you lose your customers\u2019 trust because their credit card info was stolen or if a hacker locks your system and demands a ransom to give it back, your park\u2019s reputation will take years to recover.Look at your office today. If you see an old computer running old software, do not wait for the busy season to deal with it. The big banks are already hardening their defenses. It is time we did the same. Call your software provider this week and ask them what they are doing to protect your data from AI-based threats like Mythos. If they do not have a specific, technical answer, it might be time to start looking for a partner who takes your security seriously.Mark Koep is the founder and CEO of CampgroundViews, a platform that offers virtual tours of campgrounds across North America.
