(June 03, 2026) \u2014 Today, the National Security Agency (NSA) joins the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and other U.S. government agencies to jointly release the fact sheet, “CISA and Partners Urge Hardening Automatic Tank Gauge Systems.” \u00a0The fact sheet warns U.S. critical infrastructure sectors \u2014 including energy, chemical, food and agriculture, and transportation systems \u2014 of malicious cyber activity targeting automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems. ATG systems are widely used to remotely monitor fuel and liquid levels, temperature, and potential leaks in storage tanks.\u00a0The recent malicious cyber activity observed by the authoring organizations emanates from unattributed cyber threat actors compromising, and subsequently modifying through command execution, internet-exposed ATG systems. This fact sheet provides insight into probable tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) leveraged by the actors, highlights risk factors associated with such compromises, and provides recommendations and resources to reduce the likelihood of continued malicious activity targeting U.S.-based ATG systems.Due to the widespread use of ATG systems and ongoing targeting of these systems by cyber threat actors, NSA recommends all OT owners and operators within the National Security Systems, Department of War, Defense Industrial Base, U.S. Government, and U.S. critical infrastructure sectors review and implement the mitigations outlined to prevent adversary access and compromise of ATG systems.Other U.S. government agencies also partnering with CISA on the guidance are the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Transportation Security Agency, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Agriculture.Read the full report.Visit our full library for more cybersecurity information and technical guidance.<\/p>\n
