Davies\u00a0is from a U.S. Army family, with her father\u00a0having served\u00a0in Vietnam.\u00a0Her\u00a0work\u00a0experience\u00a0before, however, was not necessarily in the defense industrial base.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is new for me, and I wanted to make sure that I captured the ethos of warfighters, that I captured the spirit of the\u00a0department and married that to the direction from the president and from the secretary,\u201d Davies said.\u00a0\u201cEven\u00a0when I\u00a0was\u00a0at\u00a0Booz\u00a0Allen, I was on the commercial side, so I haven’t really had any exposure to this world at all.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

As such, Davies spent the first weeks of her tenure as CIO on a listening and learning tour, hearing from industry and military leaders.\u00a0\u201cI wanted to be very thoughtful about my approach and make sure I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0just go,\u00a0\u2018Oh, I know this,\u00a0and\u00a0we’re\u00a0going to\u00a0do that.\u2019\u00a0Let me learn a few things, and\u00a0I’m\u00a0glad I did.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first announcement\u00a0from Davies\u00a0is a\u00a0five-year\u00a0$9.7 billion\u00a0Microsoft Enterprise\u00a0Software\u00a0Agreement with Dell Federal\u00a0Systems executed by the CIO\u2019s office.\u00a0As a result, end-users and\u00a0organizations in the department will have a streamlined experience for software, licenses and usage, Davies said.<\/p>\n

The effort will\u00a0greatly\u00a0simplify\u00a0the\u00a0enterprise\u00a0experience\u00a0by\u00a0providing a single point of contact,\u00a0eliminating\u00a0different price\u00a0points\u00a0and\u00a0getting rid of different\u00a0start and end times\u00a0in its\u00a0license\u00a0expiration\u00a0terms, amongst\u00a0other improvements.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an enterprise capability\u00a0for our\u00a0Microsoft licenses and the usage of Microsoft across the\u00a0department,\u201d Davies said. \u201cWe\u00a0had different pricing\u00a0and\u00a0different contracts everywhere. We are\u00a0a very, very large\u00a0organization, and it\u00a0is\u00a0easy for that to happen, of course, because we have so many different military services.\u00a0Bringing this all together into\u00a0one setup\u00a0under\u00a0one blanket contract agreement, it\u00a0consolidates\u00a0all of\u00a0the licensing negotiation into one.\u201d<\/p>\n
