The\u00a0program\u00a0was\u00a0established\u00a0under the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act to accelerate the development of critical cyber operational skills for future civilian and military leaders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, AU\u00a0partnered\u00a0with Clark Atlanta University and Mississippi State University to create the Southeastern VICEROY Cyber Institute after receiving a $2 million award.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AU students listen as U.S. Army personnel explain equipment and cybersecurity operations during a tour at Fort Gordon.<\/p>\n<p>The event gave students an inside look at career pathways in cyber operations, defense and national security through site visits, tours and conversations with professionals already working in the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The experience comes at a critical time\u00a0as\u00a0there are an estimated 17,254 cybersecurity job openings\u00a0in Georgia,\u00a0highlighting a growing workforce need across government and industry sectors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Located in one of the country\u2019s premier cybersecurity hubs, Augusta offers students opportunities few universities can match. The city is home to the Georgia Cyber\u00a0Innovation &#038; Training\u00a0Center at Augusta University, as well as U.S. Army Cyber Command and the National Security Agency Georgia at Fort Gordon. Because of this proximity, AU\u00a0students are uniquely positioned to connect their education directly to federal workforce pipelines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe VICEROY award enables our students access to the Department of Defense community that they would not normally have,\u201d said Michael\u00a0Nowatkowski, PhD, head of the Cyber Programs of Study at the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences and Augusta University\u2019s principal investigator for the VICEROY award. \u201cThis has led to internship and employment opportunities for our students.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Students tour a mobile training lab at the U.S. Army Cyber and Signal School at Fort Gordon, learning about cybersecurity and signal operations during the visit.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the participating students were\u00a0upperclassmen\u00a0along with graduate students pursuing master\u2019s degrees, all preparing to enter the cybersecurity workforce within the next few years.\u00a0On\u00a0the first day, students traveled to Fort Gordon to tour the U.S. Army Cyber and Signal School.\u00a0They\u00a0met professionals working in cyber operations and electronic warfare and toured a secure data center supporting cyber missions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AU students listen to a panel discussion featuring alumni and VICEROY Scholars who shared insights about careers in cybersecurity and national security.<\/p>\n<p>Students also\u00a0participated\u00a0in a panel discussion featuring AU\u00a0alumni Lauren\u00a0Wheeler and Joshua Grant, both former VICEROY\u00a0Scholars\u00a0and graduates of the program who now work in cybersecurity at Fort Gordon. Participants also interacted with Bryanna Jones, an AU\u00a0alumna\u00a0and\u00a0VICEROY\u00a0scholar, cybersecurity professional at Fort Gordon and co-founder of\u00a0the AU\u00a0Girls Who Code\u00a0College Loop chapter, who spoke about mentorship opportunities and professional pathways available through the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Kaleb Worku,\u00a0an\u00a0graduate student\u00a0and VICEROY\u00a0scholar\u00a0pursuing a Master of Science in Information Security Management, the experience helped him better understand how his education connects to real-world careers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kaleb Worku (left) competes in a cybersecurity Capture the Flag competition, working alongside a teammate to solve technical challenges during the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt expanded my horizon as to the opportunities within the Department of Defense,\u201d Worku said. \u201cI\u2019m\u00a0a recipient of the\u00a0CyberCorps\u00a0Scholarship for Service program, and I was especially interested in local opportunities. Being able to go to Fort Gordon and see the different schools and capabilities was something you would never experience inside the classroom at AU.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Worku said the visit also gave him a new perspective on potential career paths.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important part of the trip for me was the briefing about the Cyber Warrant Officer Program,\u201d he said. \u201cIt opened up the possibility of joining the Army in the future, and it was also great reconnecting with people I knew from my undergraduate studies like Joshua and Lauren\u00a0and hearing their perspectives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AU students visit the Georgia Bureau of Investigation\u2019s Georgia Cyber Crime Center, where they toured the facility and learned about digital forensics and cyber investigations.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Day 2, students returned to the Georgia Cyber\u00a0Innovation &#038; Training\u00a0Center for\u00a0additional\u00a0experiential learning opportunities. Participants toured the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Cyber Crime Center, visited\u00a0SIEGE, Augusta\u00a0University\u2019s Security Operations\u00a0Center\u00a0and cyber\u00a0range, and\u00a0explored the Garage Makerspace, where students can prototype hardware, experiment with emerging technologies and collaborate on innovative projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Students also had the\u00a0option\u00a0to attend a career panel, where they gained a\u00a0first-hand\u00a0look at positions with potential employers.
