But as that conflict unfolds, there are growing questions about whether it could spill over into cyberspace. Cybersecurity experts say Iran is one of the countries the U.S. watches closely when it comes to cyberattacks \u2014 and while there\u2019s no indication of an imminent attack here at home, times of military conflict can increase the risk of digital retaliation. <\/p>\n

\u201cI would say that a conflict such as this does increase the risk of attack,\u201d said Holly Hubert, a former FBI supervisory special agent who now runs a cybersecurity firm. <\/p>\n

Cybersecurity experts say the risk of Iranian-linked cyberactivity is something U.S. officials are watching closely. <\/p>\n

\u201cNation state sponsored types of attack are larger in scale, and they’re usually targeted towards organizations, most office, most often government organizations,\u201d Hubert said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey’ve actually attacked a multitude of sectors, to include waterways, government installations, healthcare, we’ve seen significant and substantial, sophisticated state level sponsored hacking from Iran,\u201d Hubert said. <\/p>\n

She also said the United States isn\u2019t going into this conflict without cyber intelligence. <\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that a significant amount of Intel was gathered before the first strike even happened, and in terms of an awareness of their capability of performing a cyber attack,\u201d Hubert said. <\/p>\n

Hubert added that federal agencies regularly share information and coordinate in the cyber realm \u2014 whether the country is in conflict or not. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhether we’re in a conflict or not, they do a good job of working together and intel sharing in the cyber realm,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
