Washington, D.C. \u2013\u202fThe Administration announced a\u202fNational Cybersecurity Strategy\u202f today outlining six core pillars to strengthen America\u2019s cyber defenses. The strategy prioritizes deterrence, regulatory harmonization, workforce, critical infrastructure protection, emerging technologies and federal procurement. BPI President and CEO Greg Baer responded:<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s announcement presents a clear pathway for keeping our nation safe from emerging threats, and banks remain committed partners in this fight. Nation-state cyber intrusions and cybercrime represent significant challenges facing our nation\u2019s critical infrastructure, with cybercrime estimated to be a $10 trillion tax on the global economy. Banks and their government partners are already advancing many of the pillars reflected in this plan, and we look forward to deepening that collaboration with the Administration, the banking agencies and the Office of the National Cyber Director to strengthen the security and resilience of the financial system.<\/p>\n

The financial services industry experienced a 109% increase in targeted intrusion\u00a0attempts\u00a0in 2024, according to CrowdStrike. These attacks are\u00a0growing in scale and\u202fsophistication, and cyber risk is a\u202ftop concern\u202ffor bank leaders,\u00a0regulators\u00a0and\u202fthe broader economy. To safeguard America\u2019s financial system, BPI has advocated for:<\/p>\n

Enhanced coordination between banks and regulators. Banks are investing in\u00a0new solutions\u00a0and\u202fbest practices, but they can\u2019t do it alone. Regulators must hold banks and nonbanks to consistent standards. Financial data is only as safe as the weakest link in the chain.<\/p>\n

Streamlined regulatory reporting requirements. Banks face more than 10 distinct incident reporting requirements \u2014 many with conflicting timelines and\u202fdefinitions.<\/p>\n

Reauthorization of critical laws that protect threat-intelligence sharing.\u202fTen years ago, Congress passed the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act.\u202fIt removed legal barriers and\u202fincentivized cyber threat information sharing,\u202fa key\u202ftool for defending critical infrastructure.\u202fThese protections will expire on Sept. 30, 2026. Congress should pass\u00a0a long-term reauthorization\u00a0and restore a key resource for strengthening our collective defense against cyberattacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n
