When global tensions rise, as they have amid the war in Iran, cybercriminals are ready to attack.<\/p>\n

Steve Weisman from Scamicide.com urges consumers to be on alert.<\/p>\n

“In the past, Iran has also managed to hack into about 46 American banks and cause what they call ‘distributed denial-of-service attacks,'” he said.<\/p>\n

There are a growing number of cybersecurity experts warning of online attacks from Iran on U.S businesses and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

“We’re going to see attacks from Iranian-affiliated groups, particularly Hezbollah, which is very, very much affiliated with Iran and also has tremendous, as they’ve shown, abilities to do cybercrimes,” Weisman said.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNBC10 Boston political commentator Sue O’Connell joins us on Uncovering the News with a deeper look at the history and complex geopolitical dealings that have led to this escalating war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

This comes at a time when the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, or CISA, deals with a partial government shutdown, furloughs and management reshuffle that could hinder its ability to counteract cyber attacks.<\/p>\n

“One of the things you want to do is you want to make sure that you have good records of all of your accounts,” Weisman said. “You want to be monitoring your credit.”<\/p>\n

Make sure all devices and apps are up to date with the latest security updates. This could prevent hackers from accessing data that isn’t protected. Users should also back up important files to the cloud or an external drive.<\/p>\n

“We’re always in as much jeopardy and danger as the sites we’re at with the weakest security,” Weisman said. “One of the things you want to do is you want to limit the personal information that you give out as much as you can.”<\/p>\n

Always be cautious with unexpected links or attachments. Weisman notes phishing scams spike during international crises and they often look convincing.<\/p>\n

“There have been six Americans who have been killed. Their names have already been released. You’re going to see GoFundme. You’re going to get text messages regarding these people. And it may be to help out their families,” Weisman said. “Scammers who absolutely are not connected with Iran or Hezbollah or any of the affiliated groups will just use this as a hook to get us to trust and immediately respond to scams.”<\/p>\n

Turn on two-factor authentication and use strong, unique passwords or a password manager to keep one breach from spreading across accounts.<\/p>\n
