The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency continues to face leadership uncertainty, after CISA\u2019s acting director was moved to another Department of Homeland Security position following a rocky tenure.

\nIn recent months, Gottumukkala had faced increasing congressional scrutiny after reports that he failed a polygraph test and uploaded sensitive documents to a public version of ChatGPT. Gottumukkala most recently reportedly attempted to force out CISA\u2019s long serving CIO.
\n\u201cI think most people aren\u2019t surprised and will not miss him,\u201d a current CISA employee told Federal News Network. \u201cHe was ineffective and out of touch with the mission. Nick will be a welcomed change.\u201d
\nIn a Friday evening email to CISA employees, Andersen thanked Gottumukkala for his service at the agency. He also announced that Chris Bhutera, Andersen\u2019s deputy, will serve as acting executive assistant director for cybersecurity, as he did for several months last year.
\nNick Andersen also acknowledged the \u201cdedication\u201d of the CISA workforce during the ongoing shutdown.

\nDuring a House Homeland Security Committee hearing last month, lawmakers repeatedly pressed Gottumukkala on CISA\u2019s reorganization plans. The acting director said CISA did not have any plans to reorganize. But some lawmakers left frustrated with his responses to those questions and others about the ongoing changes at CISA.
\nCurrent and former officials are also hopeful Andersen \u2013 who served in senior cyber roles during the first Trump administration \u2013 can help stabilize CISA.
\nA former CISA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency is \u201cabsorbing pressure from multiple directions right now.\u201d The official pointed to the leadership turnover, the ongoing shutdown, the \u201caggressive implementation\u201d of executive direction like CISA\u2019s recent emergency directive, and uncertainty in the agency\u2019s workforce.
\nMeanwhile, the \u201cgeopolitical environment\u201d with Iran and other tensions could lead to \u201cretaliation against U.S. infrastructure,\u201d the former official said.
