(KFVS) – In 2026, cybersecurity is more important than ever.Zachary Lewis is over IT and security at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis.In his new book, \u201cLocked Up: Lessons Learned from A Real-World LockBit Ransomware Response,\u201d Lewis details the experience of working with a team to battle a large-scale attack on the school.\u201cYou have thousands of students, you have lots of employees, and you really want to make sure their information is kept safe. You want to make sure they can come and learn and take their courses and everything, but when ransomware attacks, that\u2019s all shut down.\u201d’Lewis said fighting the attack took many hours of work by a large group of people.\u201cYou\u2019re looking at how did the bad guys get in, how do we recover and make sure they don\u2019t come back in, and really making sure you get that data back without having to pay millions of dollars for it in some cases.\u201dThe average reader is not in charge of cybersecurity at a large institution, but Lewis said his story can apply to anyone.\u201cRansomware is becoming a part of everyday society and organizations are faced with that every year and growing attacks each year,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cI wanted to really make a roadmap to help people guide their way through it and help them out and make the industry a safer place.\u201dKeeping online accounts safe is vital in the modern world.\u201cThat\u2019s where all of our most critical and sensitive data are. Health records, student records, financial information, we really want to keep that stuff secure.\u201dLewis said even the average person with a home computer or smart device can be hit by a ransomware attack.\u201cEntry point for threat actors is usually email, suspicious links in emails that people click on, try to access stuff, information they\u2019re sharing, weak passwords,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cWe see this happening with small businesses, hospitals, schools, small local governments.\u201d Lewis said he wrote the book to give people a guide for protecting themselves online.\u201cWe have a whole lessons-learned area talking about putting on multi-factor authentication, changing passwords, not clicking certain links, resources that you can reach out to for help.\u201dClick here to view the book on Amazon.Copyright 2026 KFVS.
