Australia plans to enact laws to regulate AI data centres’ power and water usage, aiming to balance the growth of data centres with national interests.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the need to establish trust in AI and protect national security through new legislation set to be introduced next year.
The laws will include clear legal obligations, such as ensuring data centres contribute more power back to the grid and minimizing water usage.
The government aims to protect creative copyright, prohibiting AI companies from using Australian creative works without proper consent.
Albanese emphasized that Australia should not be solely a data warehouse for foreign AI products and stressed that AI should be used to create, not destroy, jobs.
A dedicated office will be established to oversee AI policy, enhancing international investment appeal by simplifying approval and compliance processes.
The announcement follows lobbying efforts by US startup Anthropic to change Australian copyright laws for AI model training, which the government aims to resist.
