According to research conducted by Viking Cloud, nearly 80 percent of restaurants that provide delivery services experienced at least one cybersecurity incident during the past 12 months. Even more concerning, over 76 percent of respondents reported suffering data breaches as a direct result of cyberattacks. These findings underline the growing need for stronger cybersecurity practices within the hospitality sector, where digital services have become essential for daily operations.
Despite the high number of reported incidents, the study revealed a surprising disconnect between perception and reality. Around 94 percent of restaurant owners expressed confidence that their existing cybersecurity measures were proactive enough to detect and prevent attacks before they caused significant damage. However, the frequency of successful cyber incidents suggests that many businesses may be overestimating the effectiveness of their current security strategies.
Data breaches in the restaurant industry can expose a wide range of sensitive information. Customer payment card details are among the most commonly targeted assets, but attackers also seek employee payroll records, business financial information, and other confidential operational data. Such breaches can lead to financial losses, regulatory penalties, legal challenges, and long-term damage to a restaurant’s reputation. In many cases, businesses also face declining customer trust after a security incident becomes public.
The report also identified one of the key reasons behind these security gaps. Although many restaurant owners are confident about their cybersecurity readiness, they often delay installing critical software updates and security patches. Many fear that applying updates could temporarily interrupt business operations, cause system downtime, or negatively affect customer service during busy periods. While these concerns are understandable, postponing essential updates leaves systems exposed to known vulnerabilities that cybercriminals can easily exploit.
Another significant concern highlighted by the research is the lack of awareness regarding evolving cyber threats. More than 36 percent of restaurant owners who participated in the survey admitted they were unfamiliar with modern social engineering techniques, including deepfake-based scams and voice phishing, commonly known as vishing. As cybercriminals continue to use increasingly sophisticated tactics to deceive employees, insufficient awareness and training can make restaurant staff easy targets for phishing attacks and credential theft.
The findings suggest that restaurants must complement their technology investments with regular cybersecurity training, timely software updates, and comprehensive incident response planning. As digital transactions and online food delivery continue to expand, strengthening cybersecurity has become a business necessity rather than an optional investment. A proactive approach that combines technology, employee awareness, and continuous monitoring will be essential for protecting customer data, maintaining business continuity, and preserving consumer confidence in an increasingly connected restaurant industry.
