Telstra’s mobile network faced a major outage on Wednesday, affecting thousands in Australia with inability to make calls or access data, mainly due to a “software defect” related to time synchronisation.
The outage disrupted various essential services including payment systems, public transport, and electric vehicle charging, highlighting the critical role mobile networks play in modern economic infrastructure.
There were significant impacts on sectors like small businesses reliant on mobile networks for EFTPOS transactions, along with interruptions in train services due to communication breakdowns with control centers.
Although the initial estimated economic cost is unclear, it could involve losses from cancelled fares and travel, missed sales, and delays in freight, among others, stressing the need for compensation processes like the one proposed by Federal Minister Anne Aly.
Telstra resolved the main issue by Thursday afternoon but had to address and fix a secondary issue affecting Triple Zero calls, completing over 600 welfare checks in the process.
