Head of employment service: AI bringing increased unemployment in hi-tech sector

Unemployment in the hi-tech sector has reached a record high, with over 16,000 workers recently registering as unemployed, according to Inbal Mashash, director general of the Israel Employment Service.
The significant rise in job seekers, compared to 2022, is threefold and shows a concerning trend, especially among developers, with high exposure to artificial intelligence.
Mashash noted a strong correlation between the increased number of unemployed workers and the expansion of artificial intelligence within the industry.
The Employment Service is focusing on upskilling to help both hi-tech professionals and those in other sectors adapt to rapidly changing labor market conditions driven by new technologies.
The organization is working in collaboration with the Innovation Authority, AI headquarters, and the Manufacturers Association to reintegrate displaced workers into non-tech fields, bringing dual benefits to the workers and traditional industries.
Mashash anticipates another increase in unemployment in the coming months, followed by a gradual moderation of the trend.
