NORFOLK, Va. — Old Dominion University has announced the launch of Virginia’s first Ph.D. program specifically focused on cybersecurity.

The new doctorate is designed to prepare future cybersecurity leaders, researchers and educators to address emerging security challenges, including those involving artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.

The university’s School of Cybersecurity has gained several national recognitions, including the National Security Agency (NSA) designations as Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, Cyber Operations and Cyber Research. The NSA also granted the university official validation for its cyber artificial intelligence programs of study.

The new program is among the first of its kind in the nation and represents a new phase of growth for the school, which has grown from just a handful of students to approximately 1,700 in the last decade. The school celebrated its 10th anniversary this year.

“The School of Cybersecurity has made its mark on the institution and beyond,” ODU President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., said in a news release. “With our significant success and this exciting development, Old Dominion University is well positioned to embark on this new chapter, which will continue to be defined by academic excellence and world-class research. Without question, we are proud to serve as leading experts in the Commonwealth of Virginia and true innovators across the nation.”

The launch of the Ph.D. program in cybersecurity marks another milestone in ODU’s investment in one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most critical fields. It gives direction to professionals seeking a doctorate in cybersecurity, who previously, had few options beyond computer science or engineering.

ODU is opening a new path and is preparing to shape the next generation of cybersecurity innovation and leadership.
